Endometrial carcinogenesis
Dr. Mutter is a diagnostic pathologist in the Women's and Perinatal Division, and Medical Director of the BWH Reproductive Endocrinology Laboratory. His diagnostic interests are in endometrial pathology.
Dr. Mutter’s research laboratory studies the genetic, histopathologic, and clinical features of premalignant endometrial disease. He has developed tools for objective precancer diagnosis including genetic clonality assays, computerized morphometric analysis of tissue structure, and informative biomarkers. Correlation of monoclonal growth of premalignant disease with routine histopathology has led to revised diagnostic criteria for endometrial precancers: Endometrial Intraepithelial Neoplasia. . Most recently, loss of function of the tumor suppressor gene PTEN, which occurs in over 80% of endometrial cancers with a premalignant phase, has been established as an early event in the initiation of premalignant endometrial disease. Premalignant endometrial cells detected by the PTEN biomarker are the earliest stage and highest prevalence of nonfamilial precancerous lesions ever shown in humans. Dr. Mutter is now studying those progression events which determine which small fraction of latent endometrial precancers will progress to carcinoma.
